Peter de Cupere

Belgian olfactory artist Peter de Cupere is one of the foremost proponents of the use of scent in art. By using the sense of smell across media, Peter de Cupere creates concepts and contexts that involve our memory and existence. His works engage the future of nature, our environment, and climate change as well as political and social impacts. Generating a kind of meta-sensory experience that goes beyond purely seeing or smelling, Peter de Cupere’s primary concerns relate to the nature of human perception and self-exploration. His installations invite the spectator’s participation and interaction through the sense of smell. Most of his olfactory works of art employ commonly recognized scents, however for Garden of Eden he has created a scent that is an evocative but hard to place remembrance of a utopia.
