Kim Simonsson

Placing his sculptures in different contexts; ceramicist Kim Simonsson has a passion for mise en scène. Photographed in nature, they become one with the countryside. Conversely, in the industrial setting of his Helsinki atelier, they are pulled into reality out of the imaginary world where they seemingly belong. His figures are also placed in different fantastical universes, such as the sets of science fiction films.

Even as a child, he sculpted characters like Donald Duck in the snow. During his studies, he became captivated by the variety of forms offered by ceramic and glass techniques. Inspired by the imaginative quality of fairy tales, his pieces form associations between innocence and strangeness and adopt aspects of the childlike and the animal.
